Anthropic Scoops Up Stainless in Bid to Dominate Developer Tooling for AI Agents
Anthropic has acquired Stainless, a startup that automatically generates software development kits (SDKs) from API specifications, in a deal analysts say will tighten its grip on the 'last mile' of developer experience for AI agents. The acquisition, announced today, gives Anthropic direct control over tooling that converts APIs into production-ready code across languages such as Python, TypeScript, Kotlin, Go, and Java.
Stainless, founded by former Stripe engineer Alex Rattray in 2022, will wind down all hosted products — including its SDK generator — as the team shifts focus to integrating with Anthropic’s Claude platform. Existing customers retain rights to modify SDKs they have already generated, but future updates may require alternative solutions.
Background
Stainless’s tools have been used by major AI players, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Perplexity, Groq, and Cloudflare. The company’s SDKs and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers help developers connect AI models, cloud services, and APIs to business applications.

Anthropic has relied on Stainless since the early days of Claude’s API, using its libraries, command-line tools, and connectors. The acquisition now brings that capability in-house, enabling tighter integration with Claude’s evolving API.
What This Means
“Stronger control over API design and SDK generation improves reliability and consistency, which reduces integration friction and accelerates time to value,” said Biswajeet Mahapatra, principal analyst at Forrester. “It also helps standardize how agents connect to services, enabling faster orchestration and more predictable performance across environments.”
Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at Omdia, noted that Stainless’s MCP servers help optimize REST APIs for token consumption and make AI agents more reliable. “In-house control means tighter integration with Claude’s API evolution. This acquisition allows Anthropic to integrate high-quality tools and services into its existing solutions, while continuing to strengthen its AI talent.”

For existing Stainless customers, the wind-down means they may need replacement tooling or in-house alternatives to maintain SDKs as APIs evolve. That could create a competitive opening for rivals, but also underscores Anthropic’s aggressive push to own the developer infrastructure layer.
The deal signals that AI model providers are increasingly competing on developer tools and agent connectivity, not just model performance. Background shows how Stainless’s wide adoption — spanning OpenAI to Cloudflare — makes this a strategic move to lock in the ecosystem around Claude.
“As model performance differences narrow, the ease of integration becomes a key differentiator,” said Mahapatra. Anthropic is betting that owning the SDK pipeline will make Claude the default choice for enterprises building agentic systems.
Competitive Landscape
Stainless has listed several AI and cloud infrastructure companies as customers, including competitors to Anthropic. Those customers may now seek alternative SDK generators, giving Anthropic an indirect advantage by disrupting their toolchains.
However, the acquisition also strengthens Anthropic’s ability to standardize how agents connect to services. As Su noted, “Stainless’s MCP servers help further optimize REST APIs for token consumption,” which could reduce costs for developers using Claude.
The deal closes a gap in Anthropic’s platform, completing the loop from model to integration. With Stainless’s technology, developers will have a seamless path from API design to deployment on Claude.
